Blue Jays Call Up Utility Man Ernie Clement
Third Baseman Joins Team Ahead of Monday's Series Opener
Clement to Provide Flexibility and Depth to Toronto Roster
CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Toronto Blue Jays have called up utility man Ernie Clement from Triple-A Buffalo, the team announced Monday. Clement will join the team ahead of their series opener against the Minnesota Twins.
Clement, 27, has played a variety of positions in the minors, including shortstop, second base, and third base. He has a .273 batting average and .333 on-base percentage in 93 games at Triple-A this season.
"Ernie is a versatile player who gives us some depth and flexibility," Blue Jays manager Charlie Montoyo said. "He can play multiple positions and he's a good hitter and fielder. We're excited to have him on the team."
Clement is expected to provide depth in the Blue Jays' infield, which has been depleted by injuries to Bo Bichette and Cavan Biggio. He could also see time in the outfield if needed.
The Blue Jays are currently 55-57 and in fourth place in the AL East. They are 5.5 games behind the Tampa Bay Rays for the final wild card spot.
